A generous array of ripe black and blue fruit with pink peppercorns, green olives, dried flowers, toffee and chocolate orange. It’s full-bodied with firm, creamy and velvety tannins. Long and polished. Lovely salted caramel and olives at the end. Keeps going. Unfolds on the finish. 70% carmenere, 18% merlot, 8% cabernet sauvignon and 4% petit verdot.

The 2019 Clos Apalta was produced with a blend of 70% Carmenere, 18% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Petit Verdot, extremely high in Carmenere and low in Cabernet Sauvignon in a ripe and warm year. It fermented with indigenous yeasts for four to five weeks, with manual punch-down of the cap, 67% in 7,500-liter French oak vats and 33% in new French oak barrels followed by malolactic in new French oak barrels. The élevage was 24 months in 90% new barrels and 10% second use. It's powerful, big and ripe, with 15% alcohol and a pH of 3.57. It's creamy and juicy, with very high ripeness and a notable absence of herbal notes; it's oaky, smoky and decadent, coming through as luxurious, round, lush and velvety. It's full-bodied and has abundant, small and powdery tannins.

Take Ancestor Vines (planted in 1894), a great vintage, experienced winemaking, add 30 months of aging in American and French oak, and the result is the stunning 2018 Command Single Vineyard Shiraz. Boasting fabulous density and concentration, this full-bodied effort is still almost embryonic in its development, with tarry, mocha, yet lifted notes accenting intense blackberry fruit; a rich, supple yet structured mouthfeel, and a long, mouthwatering finish.

A special 3,200-bottle release culled from a selection of Sangiovese from their Pian Bossolino and Poggio al Sole plots, the La Fiorita 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Fiore di No is a very convincing wine that offers much more depth and complexity than the estate's classic Brunello. The wine opens to dark fruit, spice and camphor ash and then shows a very complete, wide-brush-stroke approach to the grape. You get the dark primary fruit, the depth and the length on the mouthfeel.

The cherry, black-olive and dried-strawberry aromas are so attractive. Hints of cinnamon and licorice. Full-bodied, round and rich with lots of fruit and velvety tannins. Extremely flavorful and rich. Drink after 2022.

Deep red. Captivating aromas of red cherry, strawberry, sweet pipe tobacco, and flint. Impressively built, multifaceted and layered, this boasts very pure and round flavors similar to the aromas. The finish is long and dense, and features polished tannins and a suave texture. Knockout Brunello, probably the best I have had from La Fiorita in a very long time, and likely ever. Noticeably less floral than the 2015 classico Brunello from this estate but more complex and much deeper. Made with grapes taken from the best part of the Pian Bossolino and Poggio al Sole vineyards. The NO on the label stands for Natalie Oliveros, the estate owner; a real knockout, this wine is only made in the best vintages.

The 2021 Chateauneuf du Pape Deus Ex Machina is a strong candidate to be wine of the vintage. A blend of 60% Grenache and 40% Mourvèdre, it combines scents of black truffles and black cherries with hints of cedar and vanilla (the Mourvèdre is aged in new oak, the Grenache in concrete). It's full-bodied and concentrated, supple and almost creamy in feel, then long and velvety on the finish. Bravo.

A perfumed, very attractive red, with a generous and heady cascade of ripe steeped plum and cherry flavors. Silky on the lush palate, with polished, perfectly integrated tannins giving textural intrigue. Smoked meat and incense notes mingle with mulling spices and charred apple wood on the finish, which goes on and on. Powerful but not heavy-handed. Grenache and Mourvèdre.

Lots to like here. This red has bouncy energy from the get-go, with spice-infused raspberry and red currant preserve flavors bouncing along with floral and briar notes. A cassis bush note pervades on the finish. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Malbec.

Dried violets, potpourri, pine, blackcurrants and cloves on the nose. Ash, too. It’s medium-to full-bodied with firm, silky tannins. Layers of juicy blue and purple fruit and flowers. So sleek and refined. Builds on the palate. From organically grown fruit.

Composed of 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Cabernet Franc, 8% Merlot, 2% Petit Verdot and 2% Malbec, the 2018 The Puzzle was aged in french oak, 40% new, for 18 months. Each variety was aged separately and blended pre-bottling. Deep garnet-purple colored, it comes barreling out of the glass with vibrant scents of baked black plums, blueberry preserves and blackcurrant cordial, plus nuances of pencil lead, unsmoked cigars, bay leaves and allspice. Medium-bodied, the palate is delicately played and yet has great intensity, supported by soft tannins and just enough freshness, finishing on a savory/dried herbs note.
